We are never alone

The purpose of the Gosple of Jesus Christ is not to help us avoid problems or trials, but to help us to be able to overcome them. If we take a step back and think about why exactly we are here on this earth, it becomes clear that trials are a necessary part of life. God is trying to make us into Gods. He wants us to become exactly like Him. His joy is full and complete, and He wants us to experience what He has. One could question how we could ever be happy with trials. Doesn't being "happy" mean being free from hard things? No. There will always be hard things. Even God has trials. Imagine how He feels when one of His children, who He works endlessly for, rejects Him, and foolishly chooses to cling to the "small things" of the world. Things will never be easy. It is contrary to existence. However, we can find happiness even throughout the trials that come our way. It all depends on our focus. If we thought that God was helping us to grow and become like Him because He loves us enough to teach us, every time a hard thing came our way, I am sure we would take it smiling. If we stopped to think about our grand potential and how small most things really are, happiness can be found anywhere. I have a testimony that every human being on this earth can be happier than they now are, based on their application of the tools God has given us.
It all starts with the Atonement. When something hard happens, when we make a mistake, when others offend us, when we are sick, when we are scared or worried or simply unsure and anxious, we can count on our Savior to help us carry the load. WE DON'T HAVE TO DO THIS ALONE. We are never alone. Jesus Christ is always at our side ready to help us carry the cross we have been given. He is strong and able to help us, no matter what problem we have. He can erase guilt. Help you to forgive an offensive comment. Give you peace when your soul is in unrest. He can do it! We have no idea just how close He is to us in moments of hardship, just waiting for us to ask for help. Pray for help, and it will come. I have seen it so many times. No person is strong enough to successfully make it throught this life alone. And that is why we always have Him. The friend who never tires, never betrays us, never stops caring, and never leaves us to ourselves when the hard times come. When we rely on Him, we find that we can have unbreakable spiritual strength. I always think back to Van Heder. I am still in awe at his example. He affected my life forever when he came walking out to the stake conference pulpit all those years ago. He had Lukemia. I can only imagine how hard it must have been to even sit up that morning for him. But he was not a man of excuses. I wonder if I would have had the fire that he did to deliver that message that Sunday. I can't remember a word of it, but I remember what his actions taught me that day. That we are not subject to trials. In Brother Heder's own words that I once heard him say, trials do not define us, they reveal us. We have the power to overcome it all. Jesus Christ stands ever-ready to walk the road with us, no matter how bleak it may appear. I love Him and I know that He lives. I know that He died for me so that I can someday be with Him and Heavenly Father again. It is the plan. We are supposed to be happy. I testify that the only way to that lasting happiness is through Jesus Christ. I am grateful to have spent one year now in His service with my whole ability and self.

I wish the Schofield family well. I love them all. I will pray for them. President Schofield is an inspiring man, and throughout my youth, has taught me many things. Hayden has been a good friend to me for years. And Sister Schofield was patient enough to let me spend a lot of time at her house making a lot of noise.

I hope Courtney does well in school. It is so important. Don't blow it off. You make or break yourself in high school. I know it isn't easy, but it is worth it to stay home on a weekend if it means being to able to study for a test on Monday. We can do hard things.

By the way, Sister Halligan..... thank you for teaching me that quote. "We can do hard things" has been a constantly repeating sentence in my mind for my whole mission. You are awesome, and I love you! I also understood the birthday picture. I laughed super hard.

I got the pillowcase and snowballs, Grandma! Thank you so much! I had to teach the Latins how to snowball fight..... most of them have never even seen snow.... it was fun.

Dad..... buy my truck. Ha ha ha. Don't forget. I'm starting to get worried. I know how KSL works, sometimes..... I love you.

Kaylee Hopper....... How is your "way back" going? Don't give up on this. It is worth it.

Did Roberto get his shirt?

Austin King Bieber.... I missed you this week, you dork.

I love you, mom. I look forward to your letters every week. I wish I remembered the tune for "cast away" You might have to sing it in a video for me. Ha ha ha.
I have to go now..... man these weeks go by fast. Changes happen this Monday, and then I will have 8 changes left..... which is halfway. Crazy, huh? Missions are short. It just feels like normal life, now.

I think Dad might be the ONLY one who understands this poem.... it's pretty "Pink Floyd"-ish. Maybe you'll like it...... meh. How many have I sent home now?

I love you all,
-Elder Boekweg

The Road to Where I’ll Was

I walked a million miles from home, and saw a million things alone,
Helped a million crippled walk, so they themselves could make it home,
My back with sweat from half day’s work, my face with half day’s dirt,
I look towards the sun again, to see it stop and make a turn,
For where it rose, it starts to set, to tell me things will change,
I hear that it gets darker now, and darker seems so strange,
I never thought I’d get this far, to stand in half day´s sun,
To see my face, in time’s own pools, and know what I’ve become,
I have come so far from where I was, and what I used to be,
The road’s been rough, and steep enough, to ask the most of me,
I write my dearest April now, as March kicks through again,
Let her know, I don’t know how, we’ve stayed to such an end,
The start, I guess is over now, and night time’s coming soon,
It’s getting fast, and day’s roll through, to greet the rising moon,
Here and there, and there and here, a trip from B to A,
I’ve found that time forgets itself, if we close our eyes and pray,
It’s hard to carve a word in stone, a message chipped away,
But harder still to carve in heart, a word that always stays,
I’m running even faster now, though I have lost my feet,
No longer to depend on me, I fly through city streets,
This war will take the best of men, and give it back anew,
But better still, than that before, if those who give are true,
I till the ground to plant the seeds, my Master has so asked of me,
The season grows to point of age, as I walk out to center stage,
The middle of the show, they’d say, I work the set of patterned ways,
My back turned to the high-noon sun, I count the million days,
Each is but a moment, a memory fleeting fast,
And soon I fear, my labors here, will all be quickly passed,
This race is only halfway through, and yet is halfway done,
The work my Father gave to me, a symbol of His Son,
The suffering, the sacrifice, and all the bitter tears,
Are hidden up, in works of love, and spread through two whole years,

I’m older now, or so they say, and I’ve been gone awhile,
But don’t know how, I lived to now, to walk the second mile,
I’ve bled and been so soaked in sweat, that my own soul, my work would wet,
Working under half-day sun, I wondered where I’d get,
My life is not my own these days, myself I must forget,
At times it’s hard, to heal the scars, that mankind has long kept,

I’m sailing through an ocean, of risky rising tides,
I’d like to say, I know the way, as sailors love to lie,
I chase the light, that turns the night, to bright and hopeful day,
And pray to someday catch it, and in its presence stay,
I wait for days of sunshine, of snowfall, and of rain,
The flavors of the universe make every day a change,
I sit on stars at night and think, about the world that lies beneath,
And from my glowing seat, I see, the gleaming people speak,
My boat only stays afloat, although the ocean’s deep,
Because I’m unaware of it, I am too small to sink,

Smile No Matter What

Questions First:

1. How many ties do you have? Do you trade ties with everyone?
I've got like....... 8 ties. One for every day of the week and change. I don't really trade them out.... that's not a big thing in this mission.

2. Do your pants fit?
Yes. Thank you so much! I needed them SO bad.

3. Did you ever meet Seth Frankhauser? (Grace's friends son) He went to the Lima MTC in like Jan I think.
He comes into the mission on March 10th. Looks like I'll pick him up from the airport.

4.  Who cuts your hair? Do you pay for it?
Elder Tway uses his buzzer and whacks the top with a 5 and the sides with a 3. He says no shorter.

5. Last night I was thinking and suddenly remembered I sent you a lego for Christmas. Did you ever put it together? And how did you like your Christmas stocking? Did you give the other one away?
I got it. It was sweet. It's on my desk here. Ha ha ha ha. I loved my stocking! thank you so much! I gave the other to Elder Hernandez. He's from Honduras, and has not recieved a letter from his parents for practically his whole mission. They don't have internet where he lives. He was very grateful.

6. What was in Aubries tootsie roll can she sent you for your bday?
Aubrie's tootsie rolls and bracelets were awesome. Thanks Aubrie!

7. Also do you have enough socks at the moment or should I keep sending a few pair with every package?
I've got enough for now. They get lost at a rate of 1 pair a month.

Elder Tway will no longer be my companion as of March 10th. He's training the new Financial Secretary Elder LEAVITT. Elder Leavitt was my comp in the MTC, then we were born in the same zone. Now we're comps again. Crazy........ I spent exactly half a year with Elder Tway, 6 months...... wow......... a quarter of my mission. And now, I can't even count Elder Leavitt as a "new" comp, because I've had him before. I've had 4 comps in my whole mission. Ha ha ha ha. One of which I only had for 4 weeks........ how weird, my mission is.

My mission is nothing like I thought it would be. And honestly, I didn't really know how it would be to begin with. But I never imagined it would be like this. God has this really interesting way of giving you exactly what you didn't think was coming. Just when you think you know the next step, you find out that you are in fact very much off course. I just hope my mission turns out to be everything I's "hoped" it would be. God gives you what you need, but not always what you want. That's part of maturity. Learning to smile no matter what happens. We have to love and trust God and His plan more than anything else in this life. It is the only way to remain constantly happy. When things don't turn out the way we thought they would, and we feel like nobody can understand our pain, or the cross we bore, we should remember that there is ALWAYS someone there who understands. I give my witness that Christ, our Savior bore the heavy burden of all the pains of the world. He alone paid for every last debt that the rest of us bring about. He never complained. He never gave up. He never worried that nobody would ever understand Him and His duty as the Savior of the world. He simply went and did. He completed everything His Father asked of Him. And we have to do the same.

I am out of time this week,

I love you mom, and everyone else,

- Elder Boekweg

Wishing for a beard

Questions:
1. Did you get your package yet? Its just one package. Im worried about it cuz its your new pants.
Got the pants. THANK YOU SO MUCH...... HA HA HA HA. I needed pants something fierce.

2. Do you like the Strawberry Whey Protein?
Love it. I'm going to need more...... ha ha ha. But not TOO soon. The Blender bottle is the     greatest thing on earth.

3. What general authority did Pres Marler meet up with?
     An area 70 from Bolivia

4. Is there a dedication date set for the Temple yet?
    Nay.

I love you people. Dad's picture in the field is hilarious. Everyone thinks my father is Porter Rockwell. I kind of do too, sometimes....... I wish I was as manly as that....... big nasty beard and everything. I might go through the Mason Halligan effect and just grow a huge gnarly face fro when I get home. Cherry red..... ha ha ha ha ha.

I am glad you think I am buff. Makes me feel good. Gives me faith and hope to carry on with it..... I am like the living carbon copy of Grandpa Thorpe. It's weird, because Sometimes I look in the mirror, and see just how much my face is not my own. I pretty much stole it from him. Ha ha ha ha. It's so funny. Now we have to figure out what on Earth is Courtney?

I am sorry this letter will be kind of short, and also void of photos....... I sat here for almost 20 minutes thinking that you didn't write me this week.... then I scrolled up and saw that you had..... ha ha ha ha ha. I'm an idiot....... So needless to say, I don't have much time.

I love you all more than words can say. Les amo más que palabras pueden explicar. I also wish that each one of you has a good week. También, espero que cada uno de Ustedes tengan una semana buena. Maybe someday I won't be such a dork. Quizás algún día, yo no seré tan como un pez sin agua. Ha ha ha.

I love you Mom

Bark at the moon, dad.

Don't go to Grantsville, Courtney

Love, Elder Boekweg (I still need the words to big rock candy mountain.)

The Boy Boxed Up His Childish Things
by Elder Boekweg

The boy boxed up his childish things, and put them all away,
A call to fight a war afar, had called him another way,
He gathered all his war-tool things, and put them in his pack,
With not much more than hope itself, his life hung on his back,
He said goodbye to mother, who knew it would be long,
Before she saw her son again, and each should face this strong,
He jumped aboard a one-way flight, and waved goodbye to all,
Flew through several days and nights, to where he had been called,
His work would catch him off his guard, much harder than he thought,
Yet also much more joyous, though days were long and hot,
He fought with all the strength he knew, though at times it wasn’t much,
Soon he found a strength anew, he needed just a such,
For on his own, and far from home, he found that things were hard,
Souls were lost, and souls were saved, and ever-more to guard,
The boy missed home, although he’d known, the war would be this way,
And he had signed his name say, that in this work, for a time would stay,
And though his day was still far off, he thought of home and friends,
From time to time, a vision came, of when the war would end,
Soon the war was halfway through, and oddly he had found,
That there was where he wished to stay, to try to gain more ground,
The Southern front, a summer come, a winter already gone,
The time had passed, and soon he knew, this war would not take long………..

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHANCE!

Today is Chance's 20th birthday.

So..... I guess I am 20 years old now.... Doesn't feel like it. In fact, I didn't even remember it was my birthday.... I have been worrying about reserving hotels for President's trip with a general authority this weekend. The best part is, even after I found out, I forgot again! Ha ha ha. My comp had to remind me.

Y'all realize that according to the mission system, my group has one year on the 25th of March? It's coming so fast...... and if this next year goes as fast as this one has..... I will be shoveling snow out of the driveway, winter 2015 before I even knew I left home.... It's so bizarre....

Sorry I never take pictures.... ha ha ha ha. I guess if you want to see an airport or a desk or something, I could take a few more.... ha ha ha. I actually went to Chimbote this week for 3 days. We proselyted with Zone Leader's and had a great time. Elder Dennis, (Who ends his mission this change) says he wants to start a band when I get back. He's going to BYU. He is a fantastic drummer. (He's the black-haired white guy in the drum video from Christmas).

I am so glad you're going to Elder Kaden Hansen's homecoming. I am sure his talk will be great. If it's anything like his district trainings were, it can get you through a really lonely time in a tiny town where nobody understands a word you say any given day of the week. I learned so much in Casa Grande.

Shout out to M.J., Reagan and here it comes.............Sister Taylor!! Happy Birthday to all of you.

Thank you to everyone who sent me birthday packages and wishes. Its so nice to hear from home. I loved all the letters and pictures.

Questions:
1.  How is summer?
Really, really, really, really humid. Hot.
2. Did you LOVE your bday presents?
Yes! The pictures were my very favorite! It's good to see everyone in the ward is doing well. And Keith Handley is bald now!? Nobody told me...... ha ha ha. I love that guy... I'll always be his annoying neighbor kid. ha ha ha ha.
3. What is the number one thing you feel you've learned in the mission office?
Follow the Spirit. We can do nothing without it. Be proactive. Be interested.
4. What is your favorite thing about the mission office?
Getting to learn directly from President.
5. How do you like the city?
To be honest, the city is not really my thing.... I am becoming ever more interested in the idea of moving to Lewisville, Idaho, and living alone among my pigs and fields of potatoes. I even told President Marler that. He laughed and said, "Why on earth would you want to live in Lewisville, Idaho?" (He was born in Idaho Falls, I think). I don't think he feels the same about it as I do... ha ha ha.

I love you mom. Thank you for eveything you do for me.

Good luck back home,

-Elder Boekweg

Pictures are worth 1000 words

Each of these pics are worth 1,000 words. Short letter is justified.

I am glad Elder Hansen made it over there. He is awesome. By far the most powerful guy I have met on the mission. He is so cool.
Shirts are cool, right? Inca cola is so gross, but I am sure Roberto will love the shirt.
*Chance sent us some T-shirts home with Elder Hansen who came home 2 weeks ago. We loved them, they say PERU! Roberto gets one that says Inca Cola. It was so fun to meet Elder Hansen who served with Chance in Casa Grande. We learned so much about the mission and saw great pics. Welcome home Elder Kaden Hansen!

The dogtags...... I was hoping that picture wouldn't make it onto the blog......HAHA..... Look.... I was having a rough day and week. And the package came........ I had to open it. I am sorry. I wear the dogtags everyday now. I think they're cool. I love grandpa. He is a true man. tough as nails.
*Chances birthday is Feb 15 and he opened his birthday packages early haha

COURTNEY  Ha ha ha ha. She's so funny. Stinkin' farm queen.

The pictures are of an average shopping trip here in Trujillo.

Sorry I don't have a whole lot of time this week. President got a lenghty letter from me this week....

Suitcases, Suits, and Bombs,

by Chance Boekweg

A room was filled with businessmen, who boasted of their feats,

Who argued like they’d always been, of who they could defeat,

Each one said they rose above, the rest who claimed the same,

They cited stats to push and shove, their way to higher reign,

For only one could ever be, the CEO of the company,

In desperate strikes to beat the rest, they cut each other’s knees,

Looking for what flaws they could, in every other man,

The room was filled with worded bombs, to wreck down other’s lands,

The boss who then would choose the heir, to the company´s success,

Then entered to a ghastly sight, the room now filled with mess,

The businessmen had been compared, until they were no more,

For now each felt but one inch tall, and wrecked down to their cores,

They burnt each other to a crisp, a personal flambé,

And now there were no other words, with which with they each could say,

“I am worth the job you have, please give it now to me,

I promise I won’t let you down, by numbers, you can see,”

They each appeared to shrink away, as vampires from the sun,

Their sucking of each other’s blood, Left each of them a crumb,

A shadow of their former self, piece that once was whole,

The boss now saw but ashes, of men once made of gold,

And so he hired none of them, for each, you see was beat,

They dropped their bombs, in places wrong, to burn each other’s streets,

With words a man can wreck a man, reduce him down to dirt,

Strip away his happiness, and rob him of his shirt,

Be careful when you drop your bombs, ‘cause really you don’t know,

The damage they can do to those, who’s streets you do not know,

Hope and Faith

So lets go over my questions
1.Did you like your calendar for Christmas?
I did! I loved it.... I can't believe it's already been a whole month since I looked at it...... ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. But seriously, that is one of my favorite things that I've received yet.
2.Do you know Ashlyn Hinton? Her family now lives in our ward.
I do know Ashlyn. Didn't know she was on a mission. When did she leave?
3.Have you received any packages yet?
    All of them! I think......

So.... Sister Crump passed away. I am really really sad to hear that. I love their family so much... I don't want them to have to face something that hard. But I do know this: That God has a plan for every one of His children, which He also knows by name. And when things get hard, we can ask for help. We have a Savior who is more than willing to help us bear our burdens. Just ask for help and he will give it to you. Some people are taken from this life early because they have finished the work they were given to do here. I know that Sister Crump was a wonderful woman who was an example of faith to all around her. I took the sacrament to her house may times, and she never showed anything but hope and faith. No fear. No pain. Only faith. Please help her family. Everybody needs support in times of trial.

I have been thinking a lot about Van Heder this week. I told his story to my companion, and I couldn't help crying when I got to the part about his stake conference talk connected to oxygen. the adversary of this earth has no power over us if we don't give it to him. We can acquire uncrushable faith. Van Heder taught me that men can overcome absolutely any trial or difficulty that comes in this life. He has inspired me to be not only a good man, or a better, but a best man. He was one of the best. He never gave up. I think he was my friend in the pre-earth life..... as weird as that sounds........

I got the Handley's package. Thanks! I am stoked for the 15th...... 20 years old.... wow..... you always hear country songs about turning 20 on the floor of a jail..... how about PERÚ?

Anyway....... I love you all! Sorry my letters are so lame! Ask me questions! Send me pictures! I LOVE to hear from different people. Betty Castagno wrote me once.... it made me super happy to know she was thinking about me.

The Man

Questions First:

1. Is the clinic or hospital that you talk about private?
La Clinica Peruano Americana was founded in the early 60's and still stands today. I have no idea what a private hospital even is.... ha ha ha ha ha
2. What kind of sickness are you dealing with besides tapeworms and chicken pox?
We've had a million dog bites, spider bites, and every other sort of bite you can think of. Also, Apendicitus seems to be a problem here...... I've had 2 cases in 6 months come up.
3. How many local missionaries to foreign missionaries are there?
About 60% of the missionaries are from Perú. 30% is still Latin, but from some other part. 10% is white.
4. What kind of Peruvian holidays have you celebrated?
Honestly, I don't know.... Every day feels the same to me. Unless people tell me it's a holiday, I have no idea. July 24 is Peruvian 4th of July, though.....
5. How big is the ward that you attend now?
    upside of 100 members
6. Have you tried your Lifestraw yet?
Haven't needed to. I am saving it... I think I'm going to get sent back out the STICKS of the   mission when I am done here..... I probably have 6 more weeks here.
7. Do you have good cows milk there?
Don't know. All milk here is evaporated...... I cry a little each night over that one.
8. What are the members like there?
You can tell the church hasn't been here as long.... sometimes you hear some crazy things over the pulpit.... ha ha ha ha. But they are good people. You can tell they love their Savior. And that is really what matters most.
9. Have you been on any more trips with President Marler?
    Not since Ascope.
10. Have you heard anyone speak the language Quechua?
Quechua is the native mountain language here. It is pure Lamanite tongue. I have never heard it spoken before, but I bought a book of Mormon in Quechua, and it looks really hard. There are chapters missing, because it still isn't all the way translated yet. Crazy, right?
11. Can you see the ocean? Is it beautiful? What about the beaches?
Yes I can. There is a lot of garbage on the beach here, though.
12. Do you have any allergies there?
     Not at all.
13. How are your shoes holding up? Its been almost a year :)
These shoes are tanks. I think they'll go all 24 months. They are indestructible. I recommend them to everyone.
14. Did you write Puddle of Glory?
     Yes I did
15. Does anyone in your mission have IPADs or Facebook yet?
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. I'll assume that was a joke. We are NEVER going to have Ipads here. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

This week was really, really fast. My trainer, Elder Zavaleta just got called as the new mission assistant. I guess I had a pretty good trainer, eh? I live with him again.... it's a little weird....... I can understand him now.

Bishop Coombs. I cried when I read your letter. I love you so much. You may never know how much you helped me as a youth. You were so understanding. You taught me so many great things. I will forever be thankful for my time with you.

Courtney..... Lookin' good. (She just had her wisdom teeth out)

THERE IS A NEW DUNKIN' DOUGHNUTS HERE IN TRUJILLO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is amazing how grateful I am for simple things now..... We have so much in the U.S.

I am excited to hear that Dallin Gomez is having a baby and I am glad Levi liked his tie. It kind of looks like fish scales on some parts.... I thought it was pretty cool.

I am sending home some things with Elder Kaden Hansen, who has family in Tooele. He says he wants to swing by the house and drop it off. He is a great guy. You may want to treat him to dinner and some peanut butter popcorn. He is about 7 feet tall and 4 feet wide, and bald. You'll know him when you see him. He really is great. I am going to give him your number so he can coordinate with you. He was my first district leader. He knows me well.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MEGAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOOOOOOOO WOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't believe you're so old...... I remember when you were BORN! The Megan ER....... weird.......

With all my love, from the other side of the world,

Elder Boekweg

The Man
The Man asked me to give myself,
And not just what I had,
He told me that He´d known me long,
Though I knew not the Man,
He promised me He´d see me through,
The things that we would face,
He´d make me strong when I was weak,
And all my sins erase,

I followed Him, though knew not where,
Through places near and far,
At times, the Man was all I had,
I trusted in His arm,
Time and time, He saw me through,
And caught me as I fell,
I was not enough to follow Him,
As far I could tell,

The Man would smile every time,
And help me off the ground,
Get me back on my own feet,
To try it one more round,
I did my best; I told Him so,
Though failed many times,
He said that all was well with me,
He’d already made things right,
I asked if I would ever feel,
An easy path was mine,
He said as long as I would follow Him,
I´d walk a rugged line,
But at the end of all the pain,
A kingdom would be mine,
And I would rule it at His side,
Because I’d given Him my life,

And so I walk, through one more day,
The promised rugged line,
In His steps, I try my best,
And keep His words in mind,
I slip and fall, He helps me up,
Just as He´s always done,
The Man of perfect character,
The Father and the Son,
